The Directorate General of the Mar Menor assumes the competences and functions of studing, planning, execution and development of projects and actions in the Mar Menor related to the protection and environmental regeneration of its ecosystem, without prejudicing to those attributed to other governing bodies of the Regional Administration.
It will also correspond to the coordination with the different organizations and general directorates of the Autonomous Community, and with other Public Administrations and public or private entities with concurrent competences for the development of projects and actions, and the promotion of scientific knowledge and applied research in relationship with environmental problems of the lagoon. Both the Mar Menor Scientific Advisory Committee and the Mar Menor Social Participation Committee are attached to the Mar Menor General Directorate.
Currently, there is one H2020 project going on, called COASTAL, whose objective is to formulate and evaluate business solutions and policy recommendations aimed at improving the coastal-rural synergy to foster rural and coastal development while preserving the environment. This project in the Spanish demo site, is also related to Mar Menor and surrounding actuations.
